Kazys Venclovas' pine tree

I thought this would be the right day to publish pictures of The Pine Tree by Lithuanian artist Kazys Venclovas.  I only wish I could have taken these pictures in winter.

impressive in size and in very good condition as it stands here since 1998 (photos taken in 2010)

and so lucky to see it in the late afternoon autumn sun

would love this in the garden right now

start of the hunting season - France

45 KM of walking and biking tracks in a forest filled with land art.  Each year, since 1997, new works are added.  Actually open all year round except for some days during the hunting season starting today (in France).
Time to fold the tents and move out of here...

trees in the storm

On thursday last week an extremely violent short summer storm caused damage in our garden, our beautiful weeping willow was dismembered,  some of the branches were strewn in the garden, others are dangerously still dangling from the tree.

This is nothing compared to the casualties and severly injured people caused by falling trees and collapsing tents at the very popular Pukkelpop music festival in our country some 30 KM from here.

I'm keeping a branch and will turn into a sculpture.

The rest of the wood will more likely end up this way...

Tricolore - 2000

The artworks of the year 2000 at 'Le Vent des Fôrets' resulted from a heavy winter storm on boxing day 1999.  The forest was closed for safety, all the artworks made in 2000 were given locations in and around the surrounding villages.

In a few years our weeping willow will be beautiful again... willows are fast growers.  But the people who lost their lives won't come back...

1998 - Le Vent des Fôrets

It is amazing how some of the wooden artworks have survived so many years in the forest.  Decay is visible but the ones in this post last for more than ten years now, unless some of the parts have been replaced.

We're having a dinner party today and with this weather I still don't know if we'll sit outside or not.  This reminds me of an artwork at "Le Vent des Fôrets" - Wind in the Forest.

1997 in the Forest

The six villages of the Wind in the Forest - Le Vent des Forêts - invited the first artists in 1997. Some of these works have dissolved into nature, others still remain.  These pictures were taken September 2010.

Some of the originial sculpted poles were recently replaced by other ones.  The artist lives in the region, so I guess he looks after his installation and keeps it in good condition.

Wind in the Forest

In July, six villages in the forest - in the Meuse region (France) - invite international artists to take a different look at nature and create works displayed along a 45- kilometre footpath through 5.000 hectares of forest.

le Domaine de Pomone

Walking the whole circuit of 45km in the 'Wind in the Forest' - le Vent des Forêts - means one needs to stay in the region for a few nights.   This region is not overcrowded with tourists which means there are not so many places to stay.  We found this little gem about 15km from our goal.

A lovely country guesthouse in the small village Woinville in Lorraine, France.

The house seems to have a history connected with Joan of Arc.

The family Haldat du Lys was granted the use of the emblem of the Royal Lily like the one on the tiles in the entrance.  The large statue of Jeanne d'Arc in the hallway was removed by an antique dealer before the house was sold a few years ago.

The B&B has three cosy rooms, each one in a different colour.

The spectacular sunrise seen from our bedroom. 

Charming details in the breakfast/reading room.

The continental breakfast with homemade jams and sweets. 

Nicole Gerard, the charming owner and hostess, is very helpful in giving information about the region.

The guesthouse is set in a peaceful garden.

A menhir listed as a historic monument.

Remnants of an antique glasshouse in the vegetable garden.

When in the region we'll surely come back here.
