to the artists, designers and craftspeople who think I call their work kitsch... this is NOT the case, it refers to my own work

MadeIn - Xu Zhen

exhibition of work by the artist Zu Zhen's collective MadeIn

The works and installations refer to conflicts in the Middle East
On the floor : Keep me Calmed (Down) - waterbed, stone debris, machinery (that keeps the rubble-carpet moving as if it was breathing).

On the right in the back : Indivisible reality comes from uncertain needs in our mind - 2 bathtubs

On the wall : Dah...Dah...Dah...Dah... - rusty iron plate, depicting the sounding board of speeches made by Middle East politicians.

Hey, are you ready?

Ben Benaouisse - Jan Fabre revisited

Re-enacting the performance - The Bic-Art Room by Jan Fabre dating from 1981 - the dancer, performer and visual artist Ben Benaouisse locked himself up for the duration of 72 hours in a white room illuminated by artificial lighting.

Killing time by using the only 'tools' available - blue Bic pens - he scribbles and writes on walls, sheets, furniture ...

HISK - Laureates 2009

While in Ghent to visit the Lineart Art Fair, we also went to see La Conquête de l'Espace exhibition at HISK - Higher Institute for Fine Arts.

The Earth seen from the moon - Maarten Vanden Eynde (Belgium)

Sunset - Frederik Van Simaey - (Belgium)

Plastic Reef - Maarten Vanden Eynde (Belgium)
The artist collected waste from the plastic garbage patch in the Pacific Ocean. He's joining a new expedition to the area, bringing back more waste to make his eco-artwork grow.

Mike Carremans - (Belgium)

Of Other Spaces - Sarah Westphal (Germany)

Niklaus Rüegg - (Switserland)
The artist cut up his paintings from the last year to make an outdoor installation.

Many videos among the works.

Bastiaan Schevers - (The Netherlands)

sorry ... no name here ... if someone knows I'll be happy to add it

... same here.

Niklaus Rüegg - (Switserland)

Just a few of the Laureates from 2009 here. Not showing pictures from all the students does not mean their work isn't interesting; sometimes my pictures are just not good enough to publish.

Yun Lee- painting in 3D

It was love at first sight. The colours, the texture, the movement, the handstitched pieces of canvas in 3 dimensions. My favorite at the Lineart Art Fair.

Acrylic paint on canvas.

Canvas cut to pieces.

Skilfully sewn together

I would have loved to touch them.

So different from all the other things at the Lineart Art Fair.

I thought it looked like 3-dimentional graffiti.

I just wish I could afford one.

Lineart Art Fair - part 3

Fun installation on a serious matter - Henri Caps

And here I rediscover a work of Elke Matthijs I've seen recently at the Galerie Art Cezar (here's the POST about this visit).

Michel Wohlfahrt
Just for one moment did I think this was a sculpture from France Siptrott; the roughness of the clay, use of strong pigments and movement of the figure (pictures of some of her smaller work HERE and HERE). Both artists come from the same region, so some influence is likely.

painter Jan De Vliegher

more work from this artist in this POST
I'm keeping my favorite for tomorrow's post.

Lineart - The Art Fair

4-8 December 2009
Ghent - Belgium
It is the first time I visit the Lineart Art Fair and I must admit I wasn't impressed. Here are just a few general impressions. The art that did get my attention in one way or another comes in the next posts.

The painting on the right is from Laurent Damptain.
