to the artists, designers and craftspeople who think I call their work kitsch... this is NOT the case, it refers to my own work

Lotte Martens - textile designer

A new artist/designer in the Leuven studio tour.

At the end of a garden...

someone who obviously loves colours has a studio...

Textile designer Lotte Martens explains the long creation process of her designs.

Lampshades, curtains, rugs ... and the patterns returning on home printed tiles and glass.

Experimenting with how to get a perfect finish on her table tops.

animals' ball room

With the gorgeous weather we're having these days I'd love to organize a tropical party in the garden.  This would be the perfect 'dancehall'.

Adrienne Scherrer (Switserland) - Château chamois (La Plate-Forme du Rondeau des Pâturage) - 2006 - Le Vent des Fôrets - #129

'The work of Adrienne Scherrer focuses on the limits between the human world and the nature world. The landscape as decor, tamed animals and pets, the " humanized object " and the " hobjectized human ". Courtship behavior by humans and animals as well as parade. She uses different techniques to realize her works such as video, installation, miniature sculpture, drawing and collage. Besides her art work, Adrienne Scherrer is promoting now her new jewelery and accessories label La Pomponette.'

Each year in July six villages in the forest invite international artists to take a different look at nature and create new work.

outdoor spring cleaning

It seems that the highest temperatures in Europe are in Belgium these days, I'm not joking.
We've got these unbelievable summer days halfway April and are enjoying it as if it were high summer season.
Our outdoor kitchen is used morning, mid-day and evening... time for a spring cleaning between cooking sessions.

Early morning sun in the outdoor kitchen.

Clearing the space to give it a decent water hose treatment to convince spiders that have settled in winter to move elsewhere.

Moving in again to enjoy nice summer dishes with home grown lettuce and chives.

A dish we never have in winter.

One of my favourite starters on the grill, bell peppers/capsicum with real Greek feta cheese.

Reflection of our house through a glass of red wine.

Enjoying this really early summer.

past + present at Viaduc des Arts

The 'Viaduc des Arts' in Paris is a nice location to explore.  On top of the viaduct the railway tracks made place for a long green public park called 'Promenade Plantée' or 'Coulée Verte'.  The arcades underneath are turned into arts & crafts workshops where about 50 artisans in different disciplines are working in nice vaulted airy rooms.

One of these can be rented by the week for exhibitions or pop-up stores.  At the time we visited Paris Caroline of Past + Present turned the space into a great shop with gorgeous vintage finds.

A few pieces of her collection can be adapted to other dimensions.

The next sale from Past + Present at the Viaduc des Arts will be from May 30 until June 5 - 2011
Visit Caroline's blog for more information.

bits and pieces

For years I've been keeping these discarded concrete tiles with colourful patterns.

The past days we've been re-using large concrete slabs, and mixed with small pieces of broken tiles they will make a nice outdoor area at my studio.

We're halfway ...
