to the artists, designers and craftspeople who think I call their work kitsch... this is NOT the case, it refers to my own work

Marc Janssens - sculptures

Marc Janssens' mixed-media sculptures never cease to amaze me since I first saw a few of them some 5 years ago in a gallery.  The sculptures always seem to have the same expression and yet they are so full of emotions.
But I've never seen them in a setting just so right.  I imagine the large engines of the power station coming to life at night to create these robust but fragile beauties.

Pollie Gregoor & Roosje Chini

Rites de Passage

It was love at first sight, the first time I saw Pollie Gregoor's art a few years ago.  This time I had the opportunity to see more of it, and above all meet the artists - he works closely with his partner Roosje Chini - and talk about their fascinating artwork.

setting : stable and pigsty on a local farm during the Kunst op het Hof art tour

the tiny, narrow pigsty is quite a challenge to use as exhibition space

 Roosje Chini

my heart skipped a beat when I saw this...

I'd seen this fascinating sculpture a few years ago in a very dark space.  I couldn't stop looking at it wanting to touch and stroke it (I didn't).  All the bits and pieces tell a story, these aren't just random objects. They're collected during travels around the world or bear ancient family history and already have a story before being joined.

The small round window was very intriguing and the objects inside have a particular fascinating story.
This wasn't a sculpture just to look at, I felt - and still feel just looking at the picture - an overwhelming vibration radiating from this artwork.  I'd love to climb into the structure and explore it from the inside.

The top part is sometimes replaced by one of these...

and this is how I saw it a few years ago

Will Menter - sound sculptures

a strange and fascinating setting

The stone quarry of Vignemont is an underground labyrinth of galleries and troglodyte dwellings

one of the so many quarries in the Loire region where 'tufa' was extracted, the white limestone used in the construction of the Loire valley castles

partly a museum depicting the life of the quarrymen, underground refuges during wars, cultivation of mushrooms...

complete silence
we were lucky, no other visitors to spoil it

an extraordinary resonance

the perfect setting for the sound sculptures of musician and visual artist Will Menter

just seconds before one sees the sculpture motion sensors trigger the sculpture into life.  I think there couldn't be a better environment for these enchanting sounds

Didier Bourguignon (click to view information on the artist, in french) is the other artist in the exhibition.  His intriguing artwork is tricky to capture on photo as it is framed behind glass.  Tiny details of his work in the next pictures but they really don't show the beauty of his work.
