packing and moving

Very busy - don't have time to do decent posts - so I'm way behind with many things I'd like to show. My little stand at the past Upcycle Festival with smaller works in the stAAApel-gek series, a few smaller Good Mood Lights and Honderdwaters.

As I said, only smaller columns from the series.

One of my latest lights made from stacked vintage ceramic cups, saucers, bowls, sugar-, tea- and coffeepot (30ties - 40ties - 50ties, mostly Boch Frères and Villeroy Boch).

Only half of it.

One of the small Good Mood Lights gets a nice greeting from the late evening sun through the window.

Other lights have an unexpected reflection in the high gloss painted wall which adds an extra dimension.

I love the effect.

But then it is time to pack everything again and move to the next 'exhibition'.

 

Bringing my works to the brand new Kringwinkel in Diest - Belgium.  There is an exhibition Recyclage Art for the opening of the shop on Sunday 27th of June 2010 .  Will have to drive twice to get everything there.  Not ready yet.  Again, only the smaller works; the bigger ones are kept aside for a different event later.

functional or not

Remarks I do get sometimes : what is the function of your columns? What can you use them for?

These remarks keep surprising me. I never ask a painter of how his painting should be used. You hang it on a wall, and occasionally you have a look at it, no-one asks how a painting should be used. Same goes for sculptures; I hear no-one ask what you should do with a sculpture. You put it on a stand, the floor or on the dresser and that is it.

My columns are primarily not build to have a function. I'm playing with shapes and colours and build a 'sculpture' with them. But, with a bit of creativity a function can be added. In winter I will have them standing in dark corners with big candles on top of them. Some of them can be topped by glass to make a stand, HERE is a detail of how they are used in a eyewear shop. A friend who - over the years bought two of them - uses hers in this way and changes the decor according to the season. Others have fruit on it or have their businesscards lying in it.

The two latest Honderdwaters definitely do have a function; or not if one prefers just to look at them like they are.

The picture above is the first Honderdwater build as a table. The next one can be used in many different ways.

The months previous to the open studio days I started a new series of stAAApelgek - Honderdwaters. I hoped to finish them, but unfortunately did not get the necessary material in time. It takes weeks to finish one as there is a lot of work involved and luck to find the right parts. In these cases I did not find it.

So ... the unfinished columns are veiled to keep a bit of mystery.

and some new columns in the black-red-white series, which I will continue.

I will have to update the slide-show on the Honderdwaters. The latest works are not on it yet.

Still working on new stacked ceramic sculptures.

At the end of April - if all goes well - I will have Open Studio Days, so I'm not revealing too much right now.

Very busy now making new work. Working on a series I won't reveal just now. Only a few hints and sneak previews with blurred pictures every now and then.

Finally, I found my drive again. Very busy busy busy these days finishing lazy projects and starting new ones. Hardly any time to keep up my blog and other things. This column of stacked ceramics and mosaic is not finished, still needs grouting and a top.
Oh yes ... it is called "La vie en rose".

I love this low winter sun. And I'm hooked on shadows, I love shadows (I've got plenty of them on my flickr pages) ... and this one is great.

and a last minute idea, still not sure if it will work - the electric parts work but I'm talking about the set up. it has to illuminate someone else's work that I have never seen, this is a wild guess. anyway, I already found a good use for it after the exhibition; some minor adaptation and it will be just what I want.
and what about the potatoes ... no I have not forgotten ... I also have to wait to see if it was useful.

how do I get good pictures?

I'm desperately trying to make good pictures of the lights I make. I've tried a zillion times, I just don't get the colours right. Set before a plain wall, a black backdrop, corrugated iron, brickwork ... in daylight, at night, at dusk ... Some colours come out completely different once I switch on the light. Especially the reds are pretty hard to catch. And some colours completely disappear.

I've just added some of my Good Mood lights of my stAAApel-gek series on a slideshow on the right of this page. I'll be adding more in days to come, I still have to photograph the latest series - panels to put on a wall. And hopefully I can get over my frustration of not having the perfect pictures.

new series of lights - part 1

The first part of a new series in my lighting stAAApel-gek or good mood lights. Frames to put on a wall with lighting made from new kitchenware. In all of my works I use recycled material, not in these, as old plastic tends to break easily or is usually scratched or stained. The electric parts are new also. I have no problem to admit that this comes in the category kitsch design.

more to come soon, this series has to be ready for the summer exhibition Kunst op het Hof.

trial and error, and finding something new

playing with colours, trying new pieces, loose sketches - but none of these will be realised and make the exhibition.
I suddenly found a new way to work with kitchenware; creating a new version. It took a few weeks of thinking about the technical part of the new idea. And finally today I finished the first part of the new series ... I'm thrilled, it works !!!
Pictures of the new series will be posted in a few weeks, just before the exhibition during the art tour.

cairn - part 1

Cairns are artificial piles of stones, often in conical form. They are erected as landmarks, indicate paths across stony or barren terrain. Along hiking trails it is traditional for someone passing to add a stone. These cairns are found all over the world in mountainous regions.

these 'cairns' marked the entrance to the site were Guy Forge had his sculptures during the art tour in Tourinnes-la-Grosse. I like this picture because it shows only stones. Man-made like the bricks of the wall in the back, the others from nature but still manipulated by men, into pavement or built up in a 'cairn'.
And of course, it needs no more explanation why I'm drawn to this : my obsession with piled up objects.
