to the artists, designers and craftspeople who think I call their work kitsch... this is NOT the case, it refers to my own work

disturbed SILENCE - finale

An unexpected extra in the art tour was the chapel of the convent on the site of the Psychiatric Centre.
Pure Art Deco.

Stairway to heaven?

in this setting ...

Raoul De Keyser (Belgium) - Fragment (1995)

Another building on the site ...

... shows work by a painter we've seen on different occasions.  They never cease to attract my attention, small in size (can you spot them on the wall on the left?) but great in detail.

Robert Devriendt (Belgium) - Sweet Obsession - collection of the artist.

disturbed SILENCE - video-works

The art walk actually starts in one of the many buildings on the site of the Psychiatric Centre with endless stairways, corridors, a cafeteria, an assembly hall ... The first artist is at the end of this big space, the two videos take approx. an hour, unfortunately we don't have that much time as we want to see the whole tour.  There are more video artists than the ones I've taken pictures from, it is not obvious to take decent pictures of moving images...

Sven Augustijnen (Belgium) - Johan, François

A large darkened and silent room with two large screens opposite each other.  In front of the screens a dark pool filled with ink mirrors the screen of a woman swimming under water.

Marie-Jo Lafontaine (Belgium) - Dark Pool

------------------------

In the centre of a large space stands a monumental structure with a blinding light ...

... one enters at the other end.  But we'll have to wait until the light turns green to go in and see a silent movie that tells a real life story about a photographer and a controversial picture.  Worth while the waiting outside.

Alfredo Jaar (Chile - New York) - The Sound of Silence

Saskia Olde Wolbers (Netherlands - UK) - Placebo
A captivating story inspired by a real life event, intriguing images (we looked at the loop twice) made without manipulations or tricks.  My favourite!

disturbed SILENCE - sculptures

Monique Donckers - Transit - collection of the Psychiatric Centre Duffel

A pity I couldn't get a better shot at these, there was a little group of students in front of this sculpture that just would not move.  And the plastic furniture around it spoils it too.

-------------------------

Anno Dijkstra - no title - collection of the artist

Every single small sculpture is etched in my brain, they reproduce famous pictures spread worldwide in newspapers.  Photos of people in situations of war.
I'd love to see my work OPPRESSION next to this.

Berlinde De Bruyckere - Aanéengenaaid (2000)

from her series 'Dekenvrouwen'

disturbed SILENCE - part 4

Els vanden Meersch - restpaviljoen - collection of the Psychiatric Centre Duffel.

Where the three previous artworks of the exhibition are open structures inviting visitors to enter and sit down, this one is different.  Made from reclaimed materials - doors, floor, showers, sinks - from a building on the site that has been demolished, the inaccessible glass structure reveals a quite recent past where privacy in psychiatric hospitals was nonexistent.

Opposite this installation, another artist copies this closed structure and turns it into an open one.

Thierry De Cordier's silent chapel

disturbed SILENCE - STILTE gestoord

Another permanent artwork on the site of the Psychiatric Centre.

Thierry De Cordier (BE) - Kapel van het Niets (2007)

An immaculate white wall stands in a structure that shows signs of time passing.  A silent space to visit and experience moments of self-reflection (during the exhibition the chapel has many visitors, otherwise it will be a haven of silence and solitude).
The 'keywork' of the exhibition 'disturbed SILENCE'

Will the last person leaving the building switch off the light?

I found a stunning picture taken at the perfect time of the day HERE
I was less fortunate, the weather was cloudy and there were too many visitors to make decent pictures.

Aeneas Wilder and Silence

disturbed SILENCE - STILTE gestoord

Aeneas Wilder - # 151

We've seen a large wooden sculpture from this artist last year, it was gigantic.  It could easily contain dozens of people standing inside.

This one is totally different, altough it is built in a similar technique.

One enters in a small 'room'.  The bottom layers of wood are wider than the others and function as seats, thus creating a cozy meeting space.

The installation will stay in the permanent collection of the Centre.
