le Palais Idéal du Facteur Cheval
Le Palais Idéal (1879-1912) was built by country postman Ferdinand Cheval. One day, he tripped over an unusually shaped stone; he picked it up. The stone fascinated him and he started to collect unusual rocks and stones for 33 years, using them to build this monumental palace. It is a mix of Oriental and Western styles. It has intricate sculpted figures, palm trees, beasts and turrets. Inside there is a crypt; he wanted to be buried here but didn't get the permission. So on the local churchyard he built himself a tomb.
