to the artists, designers and craftspeople who think I call their work kitsch... this is NOT the case, it refers to my own work

Dimanche à Bamako - Eco fashion & design

A short walk from the city centre of Leuven, Belgium ... to reach a beautiful shop with unique items.

Feuerwear handbags and accessoires from recycled firefighter hoses.

NnixHome design, probably the greenest furniture on the market.

Custommade sheets and covers with African fabrics.

Fashion by 'Le fabuleux Marcel de Bruxelles' (left).

... and much much more...

And from this week a selection of my Good Mood Lights and Honderdwater columns are part of the collection ... I don't have pictures yet, but you'll find a few on the Facebook Dimance à Bamako.
5% of the shop's sales is used to support a music school for streetchildren in Mali.

opening night

The day before yesterday, driving to Maastricht (Netherlands) during a breathtaking sunrise with surrounding fields and villages half hidden in foggy veils.  Would have loved to take pictures of the purple clouds and the sun reflecting in multiple pools left by last week's heavy rains, but I was driving...
Great start of a busy day.  Goal : the AINSI building to set up the exhibition which is opening tonight.

I'm early, actually the first one on the spot.

Well, it seems I'm not the only one here.

Hmmm, a bit too early for that, maybe some time later in the day when work is done?

Plenty of time to walk the stairs up and down to get all my work up two storeys.

After a while other creatures arrive (will know the name of the artist tonight...)

A few hours later the place is a giant workshop, 14 artists + handy helpers are setting up the exhibition.

I'm alone today, so I'll better move on.

Pawel Althamer - larger than life

Pawel Althamer (Poland) - Balloon

A gigantic self-portrait of the artist floats in the attic of a medieval hospital.  The week before the start of the exhibition it was hovering over Bruges.  Pictures HERE.

Pavel Büchler - humming and eclipsing

Quite some years ago we witnessed a total eclipse of the sun ... and I was overwhelmed by the experience.  Since this kind of total eclipse is very rare in our region I'll enjoy the occasional partial eclipse of sun and moon.
I definitely loved this work..., oh yes, I'm a shadow addict by the way. Not that I'm hiding in creepy dark holes, it's the light playing with other elements and creating all kinds of interesting contrasts that is so fascinating.
Back to this work then...

Pavel Büchler - Eclipse

too many pictures?  Well I can't get enough of it, so one more ...

Another work at the same location connects communist and religious ideologies.  At first we think we see bells hanging from the hallway of the Episcopal Seminary, at a closer look we detect loudspeakers recovered from the Strathow stadium in Prague where large demonstrations were held in the communist area.  A humming sound comes from the speakers.

Alina Szapocznikow - captivating casts

Alina Szapocznikow (1926 Poland - 1973 France) - Herbarium XIII

Fascinated and intrigued, this is how I felt by looking at this artist's work.  And now that I've read her life story my admiration has even grown.

Alina Szapocznikow - Rolls Royce

More captivating works in the exhibition, I loved the light-sculptures, but pictures aren't good enough to publish.

Igor Eškinja - visual paradoxes

Igor Eškinja (Croatia) - Flood

This turns out to be a 'visionary' installation, parts of Belgium are flooding right now due to heavy rainfall the past days.

Igor Eškinja - untitled

I love the way this artist tricks our perception.  With minimal 2D means he creates the idea of solid 3D masses.

Saint Ursula and 11.000 Virgins

We're still in Bruges, walking from our gorgeous B&B where we spend the night (more on that later) towards the exhibition we want to visit.  By accident, in a very quiet street close to the centre, we come across a sign in front of a dull looking building which attracts our attention. Exhibition from 10 November until 14 November 2010.
Might be interesting, so we walk in...
...and discover the Legend of Saint Ursula and the 11.000 Virgins through the eyes of more than a dozen artists who worked on this subject here.  The works are spread over 6 levels, each level covers part of the legend.

I didn't find all the names, so if someone knows ... I'll be happy to fill in the missing parts.
