to the artists, designers and craftspeople who think I call their work kitsch... this is NOT the case, it refers to my own work

Aug 31, 2010

meanwhile in my studio...

... things aren't going the way I'd like.
I am missing a few pieces to finish a new work for the upcoming exhibition in October (info on the top right of the page), but things will work out pretty soon.
I'm somewhat distracted by a recent acquisition : a box full of discarded, broken, dirty toys.  If there is anything I just can't throw away it is old toys.  Symbolizing our early childhood, worn out toys tell a story.  They've been played with so often, by happy children and by the ones not so fortunate.  I want to capture and preserve the happy moments and the moments of consolation hidden under the dirt and the scratches.
Here's a sneak preview of what unexpectedly came out of the studio this afternoon...

Le Gun studios

Le Gun - The Unknown Room - mixed media, size 25 m²

A stunning space at the Brussels Art Fair last spring (I know, I'm somewhat late in posting this).  I do love bright and bold colours, I do love soft natural tones and I do love this world in black and white.

A collective of artists called Le Gun...

... built a room to present their black and white drawings.

It is like stepping into one of the drawings and become a part of the work itself.

I spent quite some time looking at all the details.

mmm... can't get enough of it.

I was quite surprised by the chair in the corner, it looks very similar to a chair I made three years ago.

inGewikkeld - Trees De Mits

The former cloister of the Poor Clares.  A room that was probably the infirmary.  A work that touched me as it reveals in a 'aesthetic' way the oppressing practice of foot binding.

inGewikkeld - part 1

"The art project 'InGewikkeld' aims at elaborating the two meanings of the Dutch term 'InGewikkeld'.  Firstly, it litterally refers to 'wrapping': enclosing an object in some sort of material.  Secondly, though, it also means 'complicated, difficult'.  Is there a more popular term to describe contemporary art?"

Anish Kapoor - Double

The former Poor Clares convent was a closed cloister with an open parish church (this explains why so many rooms have bars and hatches in the walls, nuns were kept from the outside world).
