Inspiring history

When visiting the Meuse region to explore 'Le Vent des Forêts' one becomes aware that this region has a traumatic history dating from the first World War. The whole region suffered severely and many scars are still visible.
It is not a surprise to discover that artists will be influenced by this past.

Louis Guingot, an artist at the Ecole de Nancy - France, invented the camouflage motif. It is in 1915 that the French Army used the camouflage paint for the first time.

That evening, driving towards our lovely guesthouse - le Domaine de Pomone - for the next nights we spot this strange hill, the Butte de Montsec.

It is a War Memorial commemorating the American offensive near Saint-Mihiel in 1918 where many of them where killed.

Le Vent des Forêts

About 90 from the 165 works made since 1997 are displayed along a 45- kilometre footpath through 5.000 hectares of forest. Accessible from February until late September.

Le Vent des Forêts - Cuvée 2010

Wind in the Forest
In July, six villages in the forest - in the Meuse region (France) - invite international artists to take a different look at nature and create works displayed along a 45- kilometre footpath through 5.000 hectares of forest.
(and yes!! we managed it in 2 1/2 days)
I'll start with the latest artworks.

The forest is accessible from February until late September. In winter it is not advised to visit the woods because of the hunting season ... one does not want to bump into a panicking wild boar or hit by a stray bullet.

All info is available at the local villages. A detailed map of the forest helps to find the works. We've missed three or four ... gone? overlooked? moved to another location?...

And be sure to wear sturdy boots when visiting as the tracks do look like this in some parts of the beautiful forest ...

We really enjoyed the walks, we'll be back one day.

There are many works remaining from the previous years. It started in 1997 so many of the works have disappeared, collapsed or are severely damaged. I'm not going to post all the pictures in one continuous flow of posts. I will occasionally post them grouped into themes the next weeks. Click on label below "le Vent des Forêts" to view them.

We're still at Montauban-Buzenol (see previous post) and walk up a hill to discover a big installation. On our way up we see this work remaining from last year's exhibition. It is still in pretty good condition after the hard winter, hot early summer and extremely wet August.

We've been hiding in the woods the last days ... to discover amazing artworks.
Off to France for three days, we decided to stay an extra night. On our way down we stopped at Buzenol-Montauban in the south of Belgium. An appetizer of what was yet to come.
